NPower in the News: Crain's New York Business "Closing the tech-skills gap"

Even with unemployment stubbornly high, tech-industry experts say that, nationwide, about 450,000 jobs in IT are going begging at any given moment. The reason: a shortage of job seekers with the right skills. More than 60% of small businesses are struggling to find skilled applicants, according to a new poll by the National Federation of Independent Business.

TSC Graduation Class 26

The Technology Service Corps (TSC), celebrated a record graduation class this week as the program continues to help young adults secure brighter futures through careers in IT.

The class included 46 graduates who successfully completed the rigorous 22-week training program, which involved extensive classroom instruction, internships, job placement services and professional and personal mentoring.

This week’s ceremony was highlighted by a number of speakers including keynote presenter Carole Post, Commissioner of the New York City Department of Information Technology and Telecommunications, who praised both the students’ accomplishments and TSC’s mission, Jon Beyman (Citi), Cathinka Walhstrom (Accenture), John Killeen (JPMC) and Matt Horner (WWT) .

Join us on December 14th, 2011 at 5:30 pm as we celebrate Technology Service Corps Class 26 graduation. This year’s keynote speaker will be Carole Post, Commissioner of the New York City Department of Information Technology and Telecommunications (DoITT).

The event will be hosted by Citi and will also include remarks from NPower Board Member Jonathan Beyman, Managing Director, Global Head of Operations and Technology, Institutional Clients Group, Citigroup.

Jobs Get Technical in New Harlem Training Program

The students at the Technology Services Corps program gaze at Kelvin Perez, their teacher for the next 22 weeks. “If you work hard, and you take everything we teach you on board, you can go far,” he says. “You can earn six-, even seven-figure salaries.” Excited whispers fill the classroom: Most of the 18 students come from low-income Manhattan neighborhoods where such salaries are a largely alien concept.

The IT and nonprofit community came out in force October 27th to support NPower’s annual Powerful Connections gala and its mission to provide IT support to nonprofits and training to underserved young adults. Over 500 executives from leading corporations and nonprofits underscored their commitment by helping to raise over $1.55 million dollars through tickets sales, sponsorships and onsite donations.

IT Interns Available

Host a well-trained IT intern for an affordable cost. Fall Internships start November 14th and end December 13th, 2011. Monday through Thursday for up to 8 hours per day for a total of 32 hours per week for fulltime interns or at minimum 4 hours a day for a total of 16 hours per week for part-time interns.

TSC Expands Into Harlem, Accenture Supports New Classroom
