National Center for Women in IT
NCWIT Volunteering Corporation: 50+ volunteers from corporations such as JPMorgan Chase, Cognizant, Accenture, etc
Project Type: Review of Award Applications
Challenge
In 2010, a record number of applicants applied for this scholarship award and NCWIT needed volunteers to help them review the applications that were pouring in.
Solution
Through The Community Corps, staff was able to source 50+ volunteers from such corporations as JPMorgan Chase, Cognizant, Accenture, etc. Volunteers logged onto their application review system and provided feedback on candidates, helping NCWIT narrow their search and pick their 20 winners. Some of the volunteers had such a great time that they joined NWCIT event planning committee to plan the awards ceremony in New York City.
Impact
"Through The Community Corps, we were able to source 50+ application reviewers for our IT scholarship award to young women interested in the field of IT. And all I did was spend 15 minutes on their website it was so easy to use!" - Ruthe, NCWIT
About the Nonprofit
NCWIT believes that inspiring more women to choose careers in IT isn't about parity; it's a compelling issue of innovation, competitiveness, and workforce sustainability. In a global economy, gender diversity in IT means a larger and more competitive workforce; in a world dependent on innovation, it means the ability to design technology that is as broad and creative as the people it serves.
The NCWIT Award for Aspirations in Computing recognizes young women at the high-school level for their computing-related achievements and interests. By generating visibility for these young women in their local communities, the NCWIT Award for Aspirations in Computing encourages their continued interest in computing, attracts the attention and support of educational and corporate institutions, and emphasizes at a personal level the importance of women's participation.
