Born to immigrant parents in Dallas, Texas and the youngest of six, Angela felt a great sense of responsibility to not be a financial burden to her parents. After graduating high school, she joined the U.S. Navy and served five years as a hospital corpsman.
“Joining the Navy was one of the greatest decisions of my life. Our core values of Honor, Courage and Commitment, are permanently instilled in me.”
After leaving the military, Angela enrolled in school part-time, with the help of her GI-bill. She earned some nursing certifications, but started a family before she could finish her degree. She was able to land consistent employment in the healthcare field in Florida—even though she had no real passion for the work. A family emergency brought Angela and her young son back to Texas. The sudden move required immediate employment to make ends meet, but not the career that she dreamed of. At that same time, she learned of NPower free technology training program. She quit her job and leaned on her savings to focus on NPower 100% – she had found her calling.
Through NPower’s apprenticeship partnership with WWT, Angela is now working full-time at Citi in Dallas as an IT Generalist Apprentice.
Angela’s story of perseverance and grit was proudly shared at the 2019 NPower Gala in front of over 750 guests.
