U.S. Hiring Strong in June; Unemployment Rate Rises as More Enter Labor Force

Naafee Rone has only a high-school diploma. That left the 23-year old from Baltimore’s east side to bounce between short-term jobs, including cleaning airplanes and working fast-food counters. Last year, he left the labor force to receive about five months of job training from NPower, a nonprofit serving young adults. After an internship, he was hired this year as a support analyst at Port Networks. He earns $17.50 an hour, more than he did at those prior gigs,
and works in an office tower overlooking the city’s Inner Harbor.

If the answer isn’t college, finding the next step can be overwhelming. To help combat the stress, local programs are giving Baltimore students the opportunity to gain job experience while connecting employers with qualified young talent.

United States Department of Labor Office of Apprenticeship Registers NPower as the first “IT Generalist” Apprenticeship Program in NJ

The NPower NJ program, taking place in Jersey City, offers qualified students free tuition for its signature Tech Fundamentals program, which includes 15 weeks of half-day in-class instruction followed by a seven-week paid internship. NPower provides a holistic approach to its IT training, including soft skills, corporate mentoring, career counseling, lifelong alumni support, guest lectures and site visits. The apprenticeship will be offered after completing and graduating from the NPower program with on-the-job work experience and ongoing support through NPower’s Online Training Management System.

NPower Pioneers IT Apprenticeship Program with US DOL and SLATE, Bringing New Regional Employment Opportunities to St. Louis

NPower, a national nonprofit providing free technology training and job placement assistance, announces the launch of a large-scale partnership with the US Department of Labor (US DOL), Office of Apprenticeship and the St. Louis Agency on Training and Employment (SLATE), officially recognizing NPower St. Louis as a registered Apprenticeship Trainer for Information Technology (IT) Generalist Apprenticeships. This designation is the first of its kind for Missouri and follows the IT Generalist Apprenticeship programs previously introduced by NPower in New Jersey, California and Texas, and places St. Louis among the first cities in the nation to offer this type of apprenticeship.

NPower provides single mothers with tech skills needed to succeed in new digital economy

About six months ago, Maria German was a single mother unsure of her future. Wanting to provide a better life for her son, she knew she had to do something. That’s when she learned about NPower.

“It’s been life-changing,” said German. “They give you no excuse to not come to class, or to not do your work, or just to say I can’t do it because they’re just really helpful.”

NPower Receives $1.5 Million Grant From the Citi Foundation to Connect More Young Women of Color to Tech Training

The Citi Foundation has awarded NPower with a $1.5 million grant to fund the Advancing Young Women in Tech Careers Initiative (also known as “40 by 22”), which seeks to expand NPower’s enrollment of young women of color into their programming, equipping them with the technology skills needed to prosper in the digital economy. The program will benefit young women in New York City, New York, Jersey City, New Jersey, Baltimore, and St. Louis, Missouri.
