NPower New York Advocacy Day 2020

Recap from NPower New York Advocacy Day | February 11, 2020

Over 40 NPower students, alumni, partners, and staff made the trek to Albany, location of New York State’s Capitol to meet with assembly members and senators to raise awareness and request funding support for New York programs and the 40 by 22 initiative, created to advance the tech careers of young women of color in partnership with Citi Foundation.

Support was garnered from several members of the New York State Black, Puerto Rican, Hispanic and Asian Legislative Caucus, including key female legislators and chairs of various committees/sub-committees from technology, workforce and labor, and education.

Graduates shared personal stories of life before NPower and the significant impact NPower has made in helping them get to where they are now – employed tech professionals with brighter outlooks on life. Students were encouraged to connect with their local elected officials and to use their voices to bring about change. Members offered advice through life experiences, stressing the importance of creating more technology-related educational opportunities in our communities while ensuring financial literacy.

The day wrapped with Assemblywoman Latrice Walker (D-Brooklyn – Assembly District 55), Chair of the Commission on Science and Technology, recognizing NPower for their work and presenting Resolution 757 to proclaim March 12th as “Women of Color in Tech” Day in New York State.

A special thank you to Onida Mayers and The MirRam Group.
